In order to answer that question, it's important to know the difference between large mainland printing companies and Fotoprint. Our equipment profile is oriented to smaller jobs with run lengths from 1 up to about 25,000, where convenience, speed and quality are a priority. Larger printing companies from the mainland, normally represented by salespeople, generally do not produce smaller jobs. If they do, pricing and turnaround times are generally higher. On the other end, we do not attempt to compete with them on larger, complicated printing projects where a sales liaison is necessary. There is no printing company that can economically do it all, even though some say they can. We'll be the first to let you know if there is a company other than Fotoprint with equipment which is better suited to your project.
For very small quantities of digital printing or copying (5, 25, 50 copies), we may be more expensive than a copy centre. As quantities increase (beyond 50) and jobs become more complex, our pricing is competitive, becoming increasingly less than copy centres. Here are some of the differences between Fotoprint and most copy centres:
State of the art Premedia.
We use professional PDF workflow software for processing supplied digital files, which means:
- all files are automatically checked for fonts, transparency issues and other problems.
- many minor issues are fixed with no operator intervention and no surprise extra charges.
- colour profiles are automatically applied which always ensures accurate colour reproduction.
- the same engine is used to proof and print, so nothing can change after the proof approval.
- we archive every print order indefinitely for ease of reordering, with triple redundant backups.
- when there is an issue, we have powerful PDF tools that can often fix the file for little or no extra charge.
- where others may just print your file as supplied, we will always contact you if we think the resolution, bleeds, or other issues will impact the quality of the end result.
- we provide a proof on every order, which helps to eliminate negative outcome.
Web based ordering and proofing
- our web site makes ordering simple. No worrying about FTP sites or big email attachments which won't work.
- if colour accuracy is not critical, you can approve your proof online.
Quality equipment
- we only buy equipment that we know will produce exceptional results.
- we offer both digital as well as offset printing and will help you decide which method is the most appropriate for your order.
- we consider the environmental impact of every purchase, and often will spend more money to reduce the footprint of the equipment we buy.
Quality supplies
- we don't buy the cheapest papers, inks, and other consumables. We test from many different suppliers and find the best combination of quality and environmental responsibility.
No, but we use FSC certified papers. Here's the scoop:
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is one of the groups that concentrate on ensuring that the world's forests are managed in an environmentally responsible, socially acceptable and economically viable manner. Our paper suppliers are FSC certified and they sell us FSC certified papers which we print on and sell to our customers. With the paper element of the print process looked after, our concentration centers on the manufacturing of printing. That is why we are CleanPrintBC certified. With the combination of the use of FSC (and SFI, PEFC and Green-e) certified papers coupled with the CleanPrintBC manufacturing process, the environmental bases are covered.
In short, FSC is about paper. CleanPrintBC is about print.
Yes, and to prove it, here's a joke:
"Printers do it without wrinkling the sheets"
We are serious about printing but that's where it ends. No prima donnas here.
Got your attention, eh?
The days of legal size 8.5 x 14 are going, going, gone. Here's why:
In North America, modern small format printing equipment is engineered to accommodate letter size 8.5 x 11, given that it is the most popular office size document. Most of these machines run a maximum size of 11 x 17 or 12 x 18, which renders 2 x 8.5 x 11's. As a result, 8.5 x 14 is an oddball. Most newsletters today are 11 x 17, or a derivative of 11 x 17 (8.5 x 11, 8.5 x 5.5) because of the economics of maximizing the size capabilities of this equipment.
In short, 8.5 x 14 is no problem, but since it's close in price to 11 x 17, why not maximize your hard earned dollars and size up?
Yes, but we prefer that you submit files through our online order form to avoid email issues such as spam filters, security, file restrictions and technical glitches.
Our general front office email address is info [at] fotoprint [dot] ca.
Yes. Please contact Derek Allan with your preference.
Yes. Cheques are printed with an MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) number at the bottom. The ink is magnetic and involves specialized equipment which we do not employ. As far as we are aware, there are no retail printers on Vancouver Island who print cheques. Most printers subcontract the printing of checks to a trade house, as do we. If you don't want to order cheques from your bank, give us a call and we will be happy to arrange the printing for you.
Yes. For large projects, booking in advance enables us to plan for critical timelines. For most smaller orders, however, pre-booking is not necessary. Our normal turnaround times are usually met with "Wow, that fast?".
Yes. We take our turnaround times seriously. Given the odd instance of equipment failure, paper delivery glitches, sick employees, etc. we will always call to let you know that the timeline may be postponed. If that timeline is important, we will do our best to juggle priorities, presses and other options to meet your deadline.
Yes, but the size, weight, texture and condition of the paper will determine whether we can print on it. Also, before you buy paper elsewhere, please check with us as to what is the best size. For economy, we print on larger sizes which are not commonly available at stationery stores. If the end result size is going to be 8.5 x 11 do not assume that we print on 8.5 x 11.
The offset specials are printed on a semi coated cover stock. We have no problem writing on this stock but some people seem to. If anything, the pen's ink may smear slightly if rubbed immediately after writing. If you need to be able to write on the business card, post card or rack card, please decide for yourself whether it is acceptable before ordering. We have many samples here for you to test. Bring your pens.
Yes, however colour adjustment should be made by the originator of the document, if possible. Ideally, the source file is the reference for future use and should be correct. Colour is also subjective but we will do our best to accommodate the request.
Yes. We will require the number (we cannot supply this), and type of bar code (UPC-A, Bookland, etc.) You must have the bar codes verified with your supplier, as we are unable to offer this service. If you need help deciding which type of bar code you need, the site www.whichbarcode.com may prove helpful.
Yes. We can send you an email with a link to view a PDF proof. It’s a quick and convenient vehicle for proofing but should be used with caution. For colour critical printing, we recommend that you view the hard proof which is more accurate to the end product. We will not be held responsible for accuracy of colour or content if the customer elects not to view a proof in person.
Yes, depending on the thickness. Normally we score card stock which allows for an easy and accurate fold.
No. With endless variables in the printing world, ballpark pricing is not a good idea. We prefer to create an accurate estimate which is saved and referenced to. There is no surprises when you receive printing from Fotoprint.
Yes, however PDF is a format for output and review which is not intended for editing. In most cases we can make minor changes for an additional charge.
Yes for single/spot colour printing and no for full colour (CMYK) printing.
For single/spot colour, a Pantone swatch book can be used to match the sample. It's similar to choosing a paint swatch. All colours have an associated number which is commonly referred to as a pms number.
For full colour (CMYK) printing, we cannot guarantee that our printing will match your printed sample. This is due in part to the varying results from different output devices including inkjet and laser printers, continuous tone proofing devices and offset printing. Even from one commercial printing company to another, there can be significant differences in the results. In particular, inkjet and laser prints are known to look substantially different than full colour offset printing. Our equipment is calibrated daily, follows GATF printing standards and is designed to be accurate to the colour specified in your digital application. We always generate a proof that will closely resemble the finished product. If the colour in the proof is not what you expected, consult the originator of the document for correction or manipulation.
Yes. We use our uv cured large format ink jet printer and print on our in-house Polystyrene substrate. The end result is a beautiful 1440dpi full colour waterproof and tear resistant poster.
Here is some pricing examples:
Yes, however the process has different options which are directly related to the accuracy of colour and quality of the printing. It is best to talk with us and we will help you with the process.
Yes. We can print small or large banners in gorgeous, photorealistic 1440 dpi full colour on 14oz. vinyl, with or without grommets for mounting. We also carry various banner stands, including retractable, to accommodate them.
Yes, in short runs. We can print 100 4" x 4" coasters in full colour (with bleeds) at 1440dpi on 50pt. Liberty Board or .040" Polystyrene (waterproof) for about $1.50 each and 500 for about $.90 each. These are unique and highly recommended marketing tools for gatherings or meetings.
There are 2 ways to answer this question. One is incredibly complicated and will take many paragraphs. The other is to keep it simple. I'll use the simple answer.
Yes we can, however with today's technology, full colour (4 colour) printing is cheaper than 3 colour, so why would you? In rare cases, printing in 3 spot colours is necessary, but the general answer for 98% of printing is no.
Yes, with offset printing. It's important to note that the paper has a profound effect on just how metallic the ink will look. The basic rule of thumb is the harder and less porous a surface, the more reflective the metallic ink will appear. Based on this, coated paper works better than uncoated. Furthermore, gloss coated is better than dull or matte coated paper.
Yes and no.
Yes, for small quantities of large format inkjet printing in sizes up to 4 x 8 feet. We carry multiple plastic stocks of different thicknesses of which there is no need to coat or laminate after printing as the uv cured process is waterproof and weather resistant.
Yes. Our large format printer uses waterproof UV cured ink and will print directly on waterproof substrates such as PVC, Sintra and vinyl. With this new technology, lamination is no longer required.
Yes, in black or full colour. Personalized mailings are rapidly becoming a potent marketing tool.
Toner based digital printing is an economical method of printing small quantities, but if an image bleeds (runs off the edge) or falls on a fold, the toner will flake or crack, especially with coated stocks.
Uv coating will help reduce the cracking as well as adding a protective, uniform gloss. Also, we often suggest adding a thin keyline, positioned exactly on the fold. This works well except for graphics that, when opened, are intended to be viewed as a larger image.
Offset printing uses ink rather than toner which is not as susceptible to cracking.
No. We will gladly take your order through the phone or you can drop in and speak to one of our customer service representatives.
Yes. As of 2007, all customer supplied digital files are archived for future use. We do not archive hard copy.
No. We don't charge extra for rush, super rush, asap, snap to it, I'm out, blitz it, hurry, urgent, get cracking, hustle, make haste, scramble, shake a leg or step on it jobs.
Yes. Within greater Victoria, we provide delivery within 24 hours for $6.00, regardless of weight. We will also deliver to Colwood, Langford or Sidney on Wednesdays for $6.00. For those rush deliveries, couriers are always an option.
No. Requesting an estimate is easy and most requests will be completed within a day. We can respond by email, phone, fax, mail or delivery. If you request an email and do not receive it within a day, please let us know. There can be many reasons for an undelivered email.
Yes, but like most businesses, we rely on couriers.
Yes. Within greater Victoria, we provide delivery within 24 hours for $6.00, regardless of weight. We will also deliver to Colwood, Langford or Sidney every Wednesday for $6.00. For those rush deliveries, couriers are always an option.
Yes. We consider quality control a number one priority. We enjoy one of the smallest reprint percentages in the industry because of our "get it right the first time" mandate. Please bear with us if we seem overly attentive to details such as bleeds, folded panel sizes, etc.
No. We are a retail printing company without commissioned sales people. The end result is lower, more consistent pricing, increased response times and decreased turnaround times. Most of our work is submitted and proofed through our web page and responded to instantly. Questions can be answered immediately. Management, customer service, premedia and print production, under one (actually 2, side by side) roof. We like that.
No, never.
No. Other than our digital and offset "Ongoing Specials", every job is unique. We will be happy to create an estimate for you and email, phone or fax it to you promptly. Pricing and options for our "Ongoing Specials" can be found here.
Some printers utilize an FTP site, which is basically a generic folder in which file transfers are dropped into. Fotoprint utilizes a more advanced system, which employs interactive order forms, ensuring faster and more reliable uploads with a higher level of security. Your information stays attached to your file and you get a receipt with every upload. All of our forms can be found here.
No. If an order is placed within 45 days of the estimate date, the price will not change, unless:
Proofs are already generated and revised files are resubmitted, necesssitating new proofs.
Yes. We have created business card, post card and rack card templates for the most popular graphic design programs. These are blank documents with guides indicating bleed and safe areas. Download the templates here.
Yes. We have lots of free parking within the building complex and on the street.
We recommend www.istockphoto.com which is a good online source for imagery. You can either buy image(s) directly or record the number and we will buy it/them for you. Images are inexpensive and royalty free. If you buy any, make sure they are of the highest resolution.
Yes. We archive all printing records for 7 years and as of 2007, we archive all customer supplied digital files. We will need the invoice number or the billing name, in order for us to find it. We use the same method of alphabetical listing as the phone book so individuals by last name and companies by legal name.
No. For your security, we do not keep credit card information.
Yes. The possibility of a mistake is very rare as we almost always get it right the first time but if we do make a booboo, your your order will be reprinted correctly and promptly.
Yes. The term "photocopying" means that a copy is made from previously printed material. From a quality perspective, if the originals do not contain graphically intense images, black photocopying from previously printed material is acceptable. Irregardless, we suggest to always print from a digital file, if possible.
Yes. We have automated folding/counting which ensures quick and accurate batching.
No. The term "photocopying" means that a copy is made from previously printed material. For colour accuracy and quality integrity, we print colour only from digital sources. We do, however, offer black photocopying, which is acceptable if the originals do not contain graphically intense images. Irregardless, we suggest to always print from a digital file, if possible.
No. We are not graphic designers but are proficient at typesetting, document layout, image editing and manipulation. If you need a logo designed, corporate branding, etc., we suggest a graphic designer. If you need something created and you have a general idea how you would like it to look, we can do that.
Yes. We can scan computer/typewriter generated text and convert to MSWord, rich text or editable PDF formats (please specify preference). We also do a high speed black and white to PDF as well as hi-resolution colour scanning.
For full colour offset printing, the old school method of final proofing was to check the first printed sheet from the actual production run. Minor colour adjustments could be made manually by the press operator and once approved, the ink and water settings could be locked in place for the balance of the print run. Today, with the 100% digital production workflow that we utilize, there is no need to do a press check. Our digital files are managed by PDF colour management software and are accurate to the proof as well as the actual print run. If there are any issues with colour, the digital file is corrected and a new proof is generated. The advantage to this new process is not only in the cost savings but the source file can always be relied on accuracy of colour for future recall.
Yes. We can round corner either 3/8" (default) or 1/4"diameter corners on any or all corners. It's a small change, but rounded corners offer an improved visual and tactile experience of a printed piece. The minimum size paper or card stock is 2" x 3.5" and the maximum size is 12" x 18".
Here are some pricing samples for round cornering all 4 corners:
Yes and no. On very small quantities, especially photocopies, we are usually more expensive. On larger quantities (over 50-100), our pricing is competitive and generally less than copy centres as quantities build and jobs get more complex. Copy centres are great for convenience copying but do not assume they are less expensive on larger runs or capable of colour accuracy.
Yes, happy to. Different divisions of our company interest different people. Give us a call and we will be happy to set up a tour of choice.
No.
There are printers who offer, or say they offer trade pricing. We respectively ask for an opportunity to give you comparison pricing. We think you will be surprised.
Yes. We feel that a beautiful, personalized Christmas card is the only way to go. There is no specific size for a Christmas card but a common size is 7 x 10, scored to fold to 5 x 7 with matching white envelopes. The cards are usually printed on 1 side with a colour image on the front. You will need to supply that image digitally or by hard copy for us to scan. The pricing will vary depending on the quantities you require and what we have to do get it ready for print. Call us or submit your request through this web page and we will be happy to help you.
Yes. Only after midnight. (kidding)
Yes. We were the first importers of recycled paper on Vancouver Island, long before it became politically correct. Most of our in-house stocks have recycled content or are FSC and/or SFI certified. Please be aware, though, that the word "recycled" is not, in itself the only factor to consider. We take into account where the paper is manufactured as well as the mill's environmental manufacturing practices. Asian mills are an example. The high carbon footprint created from shipping recycled paper all the way to Vancouver Island is huge and defeats the purpose. Needless to say, we do our best to refrain from using Asian manufactured paper. Environmental responsibility is a way of life for us.
No. Sometimes we can overt print disaster by being attentive but ultimately, supplied files should always be double and triple checked BEFORE they are sent to the printer. It is also wise to solicit the help of someone other than the creator to aid with proofreading. Our experience dictates that an individual who is fresh to the project is usually more capable of finding misteaks :)
Yes. We carry two types, retractable and non retractable. We will also assemble them for you, if you wish.
Yes, and we print the the removable signage that goes with them. The sandwich board itself is a metal, powder coated 'A' frame which will hold two 24" x 36" sheets of white 4mm plastic waterproof Coroplast. These sheets can be easily changed out and economically printed by us on our uv large format printer. There is no need for lamination as the print process is weather resistant.
No. Here's a poem which passed a spell checker.
Eye halve a spelling checker
It came with my pea sea

Print production: We don't charge extra for practicing environmental respect.
Paper: Most recycled papers, especially those with a high percentage of PCW (post consumer waste), do cost slightly more than virgin papers. We strive to purchase those papers in volume thereby keeping the premium to a minimum.
No. The turnaround time is how long it will take Fotoprint to complete your project and have it ready for pickup or delivery at 975 Pandora Ave.
Call a courier of your choice.
You will receive a confirmation email immediately. If you don't, that means the transaction did not complete.
It's easy. You can request it online here, phone or come in. We'd love to see you.
If you have supplied a file, resubmit an updated version online. If we created or modified the project, contact us by phone, fax, email or online and convey the changes to us. In either instance, a new proof will be generated. You will be subject to an additional proof charge unless we have made a mistake creating or editing from the original request.
For single or spot colour printing, we have Pantone formula guides/swatches.
For CMYK process colour printing, we have customized CMYK colour guides which we encourage designers to use and are free of charge. Although the ink colours, calibration and digital processes are based on North American standards, they are unique to us. Therefore, this guide is better than any other CMYK source you may have for full colour projects printed by Fotoprint.
Please note that these colour guides are all printed on white paper stocks. If a colour paper is chosen, the end result will not match the swatch.
Our application for credit is available in PDF format here, or you may come in to obtain a physical copy.
Within a working day and, in most cases within hours. Simple print estimates can sometimes be done immediately. There is a pricing calculator for our digital and offset ongoing specials here.
Fast. Upon approval of proof, most digital print jobs are completed within 24 hours as long as we are using in-house paper. Same day turnaround is common for rush jobs as long as the size of the job is not beyond the physical capability of the equipment and we are not swamped off our feet.
Orders are usually written up/created within a working hour from when you submit the order form, Mon-Fri from 8:30 - 5:00. If we have no questions, we will contact you shortly (usually within a business day) with a proof for you to view.
We work around your schedule. Let us know when you need your printing completed and we will do our best to make it happen.
If we are printing from a supplied file, usually within a working day.
If we are creating or editing, it may take slightly longer, depending on the amount of work involved.
If the job is a rush, let us know and we will jump on it.
For indoor use, we recommend a grommet every 3' or, for small banners, a grommet on each corner. For outdoor use, we recommend a grommet every 2'.
These are only suggestions as it depends on what stress the banner will be subjected to and how it will be hung.
Mentally, we are a worldwide corporation with head offices in Paris, Rome, London and New York. Decisions are made from our 68 story Fototower in Paris after siesta.
Physically, just one. Fotoprint is a single location with ownership and staff who live and work in Victoria.
Here is pricing examples of some standard size banners printed on white 14oz. vinyl super smooth printed 1 side in beautiful full colour with uv cured 1440dpi inkjet and reinforced grommets installed every 2' top and bottom. From supplied file, plus applicable taxes. Prices subject to change. Please verify before ordering.
2' x 6' = $129 - 3' x 6' = $169Paper companies have minimum freight charges to deliver special order paper stocks to Vancouver Island. On large volume paper orders, the cost is minor but on small volume paper orders, the cost is substantial. If the paper is from Vancouver, there is a a $27.70 freight surcharge. If the paper is from Alberta or Toronto, there is a $38.50 freight surcharge. These costs are included in our estimates and orders but they are surcharges that may prompt the use of one of our in-house stocks, which have no freight charges.
We carry many types of paper/substrates in-house, most of which are either certified by either SFI, FSC, PEFC or Green-e. By choosing one of our in-house paper stocks:
Gold, silver and copper offset metallic inks are not as shiny/reflective as some people assume them to be. There is a reflective finish, if printed on coated stock, but the intensity of the reflective finish does not approach foil stamping. Printing with metallic offset ink is far less expensive than foiling but if you require a super shiny reflective look, foiling is the way to go. We have many samples of each at our office for your perusal.
No. All of our customers enjoy the same low pricing, every day. That includes individuals, small and large companies, non-profit associations, print brokers and governement. We pay no franchise fees and as a result, offer the most competitive rates in Canada.
If you find a printer that says they will give you discounted pricing, please request an estimate from us as well. We think you will be surprised.
There are 2 possibile reasons.
In either case, if you did not receive a confirmation email, please call us at 250.382.8218 to confirm.
We will try. Call any of our customer service reps at 250.382.8218, explain your question, and they will be happy to transfer you to the person who is most knowledgeable to help you.
Yes. If you have supplied a file to us, we can retrieve it from archive and email a PDF back to you at no charge. If you would like us to modify, convert to a different format or extract elements, there will be a Premedia charge to do so. We can accomplish most small editing changes within our minimum charge of $22.50.
Some anti-virus software, including ShawSecure, block PDF files by default. In your preferences/settings for your particular software you will need to either change the setting to allow PDF files, and/or add *.fotoprint.ca to your "whitelist". Consult your documentation or ISP for more information. PDF is the only format we are able to send you online, but we can fax your estimate, or you can pick it up in person.
No, unless our estimate is beyond 45 days and/or the job specifications change and/or we are asked to make modifications or changes, which were not requested in the original estimate.
You may have sent in the wrong file. It happens!
We could have retrieved the wrong file from our server (hey, we're human too).
When we convert or separate the colour for printing, sometimes it can change the apperance of the file.
Transparency issues are often more visible after we have prepared your file for printing.
Occasionally, unexpected results can appear once the file is imposed.
A surprising number of our clients notice typographical mistakes when they see a proof, even though they checked the document before sending it to us.
It only takes a minute to check the proof online, but it takes much longer to reprint an incorrect job and costs a lot more.
We may have entered the wrong address or a spam filter may be blocking our email. The domain fotoprint.ca should be added to your spam filters white list. Your spam filter's documentation or your network administrator should be able to help you with this. If you are using SHAW SECURE, please read the directions provided by Shaw.
You can also try to have the proofs re-sent to you, automatically. If that still doesn't work, you may call us to obtain your order #, then browse your proofs here.
Yes. All supplied digital files are 'flight checked' with our Heidelberg Prinect PDF workflow software. If there are any issues, we will notify you before any costs are incurred. Go to the 'What's New' button on the home page for more information.
We either email or call you with the details before incurring any costs. You can either fix the issue and re-supply the files or ask us to fix it. Admittedly, our standards are high, so even small issues are referenced.
Yes. We need to pay for our villa in Italy. (kidding:)
The answer, of course is no. Mistakes are rare as we double and triple check our work every step of the way but if we do make a mistake, there is no charge to fix it.
No. We make it right by immediately reprinting the order correctly and recycling the previous, incorrect order. Our priority is to do things right and we do not want to saddle a customer with something that is incorrect.
Marketing studies emphatically say yes, as long as a printed newsletter is well designed and professionally printed with an environmental mandate. In fact, in a highly competitive business, such as real estate or financial planning, you may get a stronger response by mailing a printed newsletter than trying to compete with all of the online newsletters being published by your competition.
Not necessarily. Just because a paper stock is labeled as recycled, does not mean that it is an environmentally sound choice. There are paper mills, mostly from Asia, who are not regulated for sustainability. Some of these papers have been made using a chlorine bleaching process as well as many other environmental no-no's. We also consider the carbon footprint of freight from Asia to Vancouver Island. Can you imagine how much fuel is used to ship paper from China to Vancouver Island? Why would we use Asian made paper when, as an example, Grays Harbor Paper is only 280 miles away and meets all the criteria for sustainability. In general, we promote the use of FSC, SFI and PEFC certified stocks coupled with mills that are as close as possible to us. Talk to us about it. We know the whole story.
Yes. There is a #13 invitation envelope which is 4.125 x 6.125. They are available in boxes of 500.
Probably. All the FAQs are listed under "About Us", "FAQs".
Yes.
The paper is our in-house 100lb gloss book which is FSC, SFI and Green-e certifed and is also made from 10% PCW (post consumer waste).
They are offset printed using waterless inks which have low toxicity and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and also conserve water and paper.
They are printed by Fotoprint, which is Vancouver Island's only certified CleanPrintBC printing company.
We employ a reasonable amount of security, including firewalls and constantly updated security patches to protect your files and information. We don't, however, use complex encryption and security such as would be utilized by a bank. Your files are archived for at least 5 years with multiple backups. Due to this, we can't honour requests to purge files from our system after printing, as the backups are automated, frequent, and off-site.
Once upon a time ther was a cheaper printer, but that was a long time ago and far, far away :)
Seriously though, there will always be a cheaper printer if you look hard enough. To some people, printing is a commodity. To us it's a trade to be proud of. We hold integrity, customer service and quality high in our priority list. Does that cost more? Not with Fotoprint and here's why:
Our equipment profile is specific to short to medium run, high quality digital and offset printing. It is of recent technology and very productive. Our volume is such that we can support it. The result is very competitive pricing. Also, we do not attempt to be a jack of all trades so will direct you to the right printer if your request exceeds our economic capability.
Let us know and we will jump on it. Rush jobs are normal for us.
If the job is printed with offest (ink has to dry before we can cut, fold etc.) or paper has to be ordered from Vancouver, Calgary or Toronto, there may be physical restrictions on the turnaround time but we will keep you informed and present you with alternatives, if necessay.
No. Our PDF workflow software automates this process and accurately imposes multiple up at no cost.
Actually, we would prefer it if you provided your pages 1up in order, and not paginate the job at all. In some instances (such as items spreading onto two pages) it is necessary to create the job in spreads. Make sure you advise us how the file is set up. In ALL cases, your pages MUST be numbered. If you can't have them appear on the printed copy, add them to the margins of the document, just outside of the bleed.
No. Our workflow software automates trapping at no cost to you.
Go to Online Proof and enter your email address and job number. The job number can be found on the email, or by calling us at 250.382.8218.
No. All of our customers enjoy the same low pricing, every day. That includes individuals, small and large companies, non-profit associations, print brokers, and government organizations. We pay no franchise fees and as a result, offer the most competitive rates in Canada.
'Bleed' is the term used to indicate the area of a printed image that will be trimmed off after the document is printed and cut to the finished size. Printed pieces that have a white border around all 4 edges do not bleed. Projects that make use of image bleed must extend any background and-or images 1/8" (3mm) beyond the final trim edge (crop marks). We will create bleeds by cutting on the crop marks, through the enlarged image/background. Depending upon which software you are using, if you do not understand how to create bleeds, we can typically create them for you. Let us know when submitting your job or estimate request. Fotoprint has a reputation for providing high quality printing and we can only produce quality if we start with a properly created file. Some print shops will 'fudge' a bleed by enlarging the artwork or trimming under size. We will only do this as a last resort because doing so may affect the final size, fold/score positions, or may have unwanted and/or uneven white lines around the document. We encourage you to visit our guidelines section for tips on creating bleeds properly.
FSC, "Forestry Stewardship Council" is an independent, membership-based organization that brings people together to promote responsible management of the world's forests through developing standards, a certification system, and trademark recognition. It provides accreditation services for companies and organizations interested in responsible forestry.
Green-e is the leading independent consumer protection program in the US for the sale of renewable energy and greenhouse gas reductions in the retail market. Green-e offers certification and verification of renewable energy and greenhouse gas mitigation products.
OS (Open Side) envelopes have the flaps on the long side.
OE (Open End) envelopes have the flaps on the short side or end.
PEFC, "Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification" (PEFC) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that supports sustainable forest management globally. Formed for the assessment and mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes, PEFC is the world's largest forest certification umbrella organization with members from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania.
Reader spreads: Imagine that you are creating an 8 numbered page, 5.5 x 8.5 booklet which will be printed on 8.5 x 11 paper, folded and saddle-stitched. The correct way to lay out such a document is to create eight 5.5 x 8.5 pages in your page layout software and in the order in which they will be read, i.e. page 1, page 2, page 3, etc. Fotoprint will use additional software to arrange those pages, in “printer spreads” order. We will print page 1 and page 8 side by side on one sheet, page 2 and page 7 side by side on another sheet, etc. Our PDF workflow software automates this process and accurately imposes and paginates at no cost.
SFI, "Sustainable Forestry Initiative" is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving a sustainable forestry certification program that is internationally recognized and among the largest in the world. The SFI standard is based on principles and measures that promote sustainable forest management and consider all forest values. In addition to FSC and PEFC certified papers, some of Fotoprint's in-house and order in stocks are SFI certified.
Standard Sizes are 5.5" x 8.5", 8.5" x 11" and 11" x 17". Other sizes are possible but these our fit our equipment profile and therefore are the most economical.
With an account profile, we can track your print history in seconds. As well, we can customize your preferences such as customer service rep, delivery, artwork archiving, purchase order requirements, buyer authorization, etc. We can even follow unique requests such as "always email proofs" or "never email proofs" or "deliver Thursdays around the back, up the stairs, ring the bell and run if the dog comes after you".
Consistent colour: Eliminates the vagaries of the dampening system with more consistent colour throughout the press run.
Better colour saturation: Four colour process waterless ink densities average 20% higher than standard ink, which designers and printers love.
Low dot gain, more detail: The inherent low dot gain of waterless ink allows for higher screen values, sharper dots and photographic shadow detail is rendered more clearly.
More paper options: Waterless is great for printing on a variety of stock. Without the water factor, many paper problems associated with offset printing disappear.
Faster setup times: Saving time reduces printing prices.
Better for the planet: The reduction in dampening usage and paper waste are strong benefits that are now beginning to make themselves felt among those concerned with environmental issues. The elimination of VOCs (volitile organic compounds) from the printing process is yet another Fotoprint step in protection of the earth's ozone layer.
Only 3 points that we can think of.
Business envelopes are referenced by a number such as #9 or #10. The list below indicates the most common sizes. Number 8, 9 and 10 sized envelopes are also available in a window envelope. The window sizes and positions are instituted by the Canadian Postal Service.

Cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Interac or cheque at the time of pickup unless credit has been previously arranged. On approved credit, net thirty days from statement date. We charge 1.5% interest per month (18% per annum) on outstanding balances. Your application for a charge account is welcome. Charge accounts have the advantage of tracking estimate and order history, taking the guesswork out of future printing.
Even though these papers may be recycled or made from post consumer waste, we do not condone their use because of the huge carbon footprint incurred by the freight to Vancouver Island. We promote the use of 100% recycled paper from mills such as Gray's Harbor, which is only 200 miles from our rock in the Pacific.
1/4”, 3/16”, 3/8”, 7/16” and 1/2”. Standard 3 hole punched paper is 1/4”. The center of the holes are 3/8” from the left edge and 2.75” apart.
Editing/modification charges are subject to computer time plus new proof(s).
Computer time charges will depend on the amount of work required. We have sophisticated software and experienced people who can accomplish most small editing/modifications within our minimum charge of $22.50. Additional changes to the same job are subject to a minimum of $13.50.
Proof charges vary depending on the type (laser or ink jet) and the number of proofs required. Colour match ink jet proofs for full colour offset printing are the most expensive. The most common of those proofs are for our our 'Ongoing Specials'. Here are the prices:
These numbers represent the numbers of colours on each side of your print piece. Full colour printing is made from 4 colours: Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y) and Black (K) and is represented by 4. Black & white (or grayscale) is represented by 1 (although you can have many shades of gray). A blank side or no printing is represented by 0. Thus 4/0 would signify full colour printing on the front side with the backside being blank. 4/1 means full colour front and black & white on the back. 4/4 means full colour on both sides.
In the print industry, the term 'digital' is a misnomer. Even though the term is common, it doesn't have a specific meaning other than hinting at a digital workflow to arrive at a printed product. Most people assume 'digital' printing is a toner based laser printing process, but in fact, the word 'digital' is generic and its real meaning has nothing to do with the actual print process. Fotoprint has a 100% digital workflow and the three unique printing methods used to apply an image on a substrate are offset, laser and ink jet.
As an example, our offset process is completely 'digital' in its worlflow and method, but uses ink as a medium. Plates are laser imaged from a 'digital' file, which has been digitally preflighted and calibrated. In most people's eyes, that would mean that our offset process is 'digital'.
For the record, even though we have fought the trend to generalize the term 'digital', we have fallen into the industry's terminology. When we use the term 'digital printing', we really mean laser printing.
We prefer PDF, but are open to many options. See the file guidelines section for more information.
We strive for the best possible quality so we make a point to notify you before a proof is output or any costs are incurred.
11" x 17".
Larger sizes will command a premium price as most short run digital printing equipment mazimizes at 11" x 17". with bleeds.
Digital numbering uses variable data (like a mail merge) to incorporate numbering into your design. The number is generated dynamically as the job is printed, so it can be in any sequence, any font or colour, and in any position on your design. Some things to keep in mind when digitally numbering:
On Jan 1, 2010, we upgraded our digital black printing equipment which incorporates the use of Emulsion Aggregation (EA) fine particle toner. This revolutionary toner creates quality that is comparable to offset level output quality with finer lines, higher levels of detailing and a smooth matte finish.
Short run, high quality black printing will now have uncompromised quality at digital prices.
Gang run printing describes a printing method in which mutliple printing projects are placed on a common sheet in an effort to reduce printing costs and paper waste.
Advantages:
- Extremely economical. Many print jobs share the same print run, which reduces manpower, plates, prep time, and labour.
- Reduces paper waste.
Disadvantage:
- Lack of paper stock choice and custom print quantities You must choose the paper stock and quantities common to all the projects on the same sheet.
Post Commercial Waste. This is the paper waste not related to the paper making process. It usually refers to waste resulting from printing, envelope cuttings, bindery or trimming operations and/or obsolete inventories of merchants, printers, converters, etc.
PMS is an acronym for Pantone Matching System. It is a colour reproduction standard in which colours across the spectrum are each identified by a unique, independent number. The use of pms allows us to precisely match colours and maintain colour consistency throughout the printing process.
Premedia is a relatively new term which covers everything that precedes print production, ie. typesetting, creation of art and images, file preparation, preflight, scanning, colour management, proofing, imposition, etc.
When printing in full colour CMYK, large black areas often need to be created as "rich black". By creating custom CMYK values of 30% cyan, 30% magenta, 30% yellow and 100% black, a far deeper and more consistent black will be realized. This should only be applied to larger solid fills, not to text or thin lines.
For most design & layout programs (InDesign, for example), it is simply a matter of creating a new colour in your colour palette. For entry-level programs such as Publisher or Word, it may prove difficult or impossible. In these situations, supply us a PDF and ask us to check your blacks. We can often convert them for you for our minimum charge of $22.50.
If you are unsure whether to use 'rich black' in a certain situation, please send us your file and we will advise you.
To locate something quickly, type a keyword in the search box, which is located on the lower right of the home page.
We do not just press the green print button. All digital files go through our 'Prinect' flight check program and proof process which finds any discrepancies or errors in the file and calibrates and manages the accuracy of colour. The end result is superior, error free printing, done right the first time. For larger and more complicated print runs, we also have offset printing as well as a full bindery.
Copy centres are convenient for very small runs where quality is not a primary concern, but their equipment profile is generally limited beyond that.
RGB colour was not designed for commercial printing of colour images. For best results, your artwork should be created in CMYK from the start, not RGB and then converted. CMYK refers to the ink colours used for all colour printing: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. RGB refers to the colour spectrum of Red,Green and Blue which is commonly used in TV, computer monitors, digital cameras, and art designed for web sites. RGB is used for web work and CMYK for print work.
In addition to large format (uv cured ink-jet) for signage, Fotoprint offers two types of printing technologies, digital (toner based) & offset (vegetable and waterless ink based). Both print processes are the latest and best of their respective technologies but there are differences that you should be aware of.
Digital (smaller quantities)
Offset (larger quantities)
Please note: the term "digital printing" is used by all facets of our industry, from small copy shops to commercial printers. These devices and shops are not all created equal. Be cautious when buying "digital printing" — always ask for samples or a proof to make sure your expectations are met.
The upload forms can accept up to 500 megabytes. Note that files this large may take a considerable time, and any glitches (all Internet connections are prone to them) are more likely to surface on larger file uploads. Creating a PDF file is the best way to make sure your file isn't too large.
For colour or paste-up artwork, 8.5” x 11”. Black and white sheet-fed document (PDF or OCR) scanning will accept up to 11” x 17”
The total number of internal pages, excluding the cover, should not exceed 80 for 20lb. bond and 60 for 70lb. book. Beyond that, either perfect binding (glued spine with a wraparound cover) or twin loop binding is recommended.
Missing bleeds.
A bleed is any area on a printed sheet where the image extends to the cut edge. The outcome of missing bleeds is uneven white lines on the edge of the printed piece which will leave an unpolished and unfinished look. While missing bleeds can be easily applied in the native software application, repairing bleeds in a PDF can be a time consuming process. In some instances we can fix it but there will be extra charges/time for us to do so.
There are many printing companies and copy shops that do not worry about whether bleeds are applied but our print standards are higher. Bear with us as we try to get it right, the first time.
Our large format inkjet can print up to 1.5" thick. For Offset and Digital, most stocks up to 12 point are no problem. Sometimes a thicker stock, up to 15 point, can be used on our offset presses, but it depends on the stock type and your artwork. Please consult your customer representative to discuss your needs.
Our new large format industrial inkjet printer is designed to produce photo realistic images that are ultraviolet cured and are up to 5 feet wide by any length. This unique technology can be used in various applications from point of purchase displays, internal and external signs, posters, banners, ad panels, construction announcements and many more. It can print directly on rigid or flexible surfaces, eliminating the need for dry mounting or laminating. Our in house substrates include 2 types of 14oz. vinyl, canvas, Coroplast, 3/16" 'Insite' paper based foamboard, 3 /16" 'Duraplast'plastic based foamboard, .040 Polystyrene, 3mm Sintra PVC, hi-resolution poster paper and more.
Other than our 'Ongoing Specials' which are subject to specific timelines, there is no such thing as a standard turnaround time at Fotoprint. We are in the business of communication so a conversation is required in order to determine what your needs are. Those needs are paramount. We take pride in getting our customers out of critical timeline binds if we need to. If you ask us 'When can I have these?', our answer will always be, 'When do you need them?'.
There are many different binding styles but Fotoprint has adopted, what we consider to be the best all round mechanical binding system for documents, presentations, proposals etc. Here is a brief outline of 4 reasons why we prefer twin loop wire binding: 1 - Professional appearance. The thin coated steel wire offers the ultimate professional look and feel. 2 - 360 degree wrap. Not only does it offer a 360 degree rotation for pages within the document but when open, the left and right pages pages are parallel to each other, unlike plastic coil. 3 - Temperature resistant. Unlike plastic coil and thermal binding, temperature has little effect on twin loop wire. The wire does not become brittle in the cold nor deformed or soft in the heat. 4 - The product is recyclable, unlike plastic coil.
This unique coating protects our offset and digital printing and will make your print projects look even better. It is a 100% non-toxic polymer resin which is a perfect fit for our concerned approach to the environment. This polymer resin can be applied to any coated paper or card stock, enhancing the appearance with a smooth, glossy finish. In addition, the printed material has an extra layer of protection from abrasion and will not rub off in someone's hand or wallet. There is also no loss of flexibility. If your project will be subject to a lot of handling, such as the cover of a book, please consider our uv coating option to seal the image and make it highly durable. For more information, please see "new to Fotoprint".
Is it originality? Legibility? Simplicity?
Perhaps it's how your business card prompts the recipient into contacting you. A clean, uncluttered design shows that you care about appearance and immediately sends out a professional vibe.
The only mandatory element is that your card must show your contact details, which should be readable and uncluttered.
Do you want some ideas? We have over 5000 samples in our front office for your perusal.
Business cards.
We have had customers jumping up and down with joy over their beautiful business cards. We have also had customers in tears over their, not so beautiful business cards. We have over 5000 samples of different cards and have never had a consistent opinion as to which ones are the most beautiful. For some reason, business cards seem to be an extension of the soul or personality of the individual. Art is in the eye of the beholder. What might appear offensive or unappealing to some may be quite the oppsosite for others, so 'To each, his own'.
There are 2 choices, or both. There are no extra charges for initial proofs.
Hard copy proofs are gererated for every order. Proofs for full colour printing are colour accurate. If possible, we recommend that colour proofs be viewed in person.
A PDF proof is available via email. PDF proofs are a great tool for content approval but NOT for colour accuracy. It is impossible to match your monitor and Fotoprint assumes no liability for accuracy of colour approved through PDF proofing.
If an image was pulled from the Internet or was already scanned at a low resolution (100 ppi or lower), it will not print clearly. Re-sampling up to a higher resolution will render a blurry image once printed. It is very important to scan or create each image at a proper resolution for printing. Do not copy photos or logos from a website, these are generally 72 ppi (pixels per inch) and look fine on your monitor, but will be of a poor print quality. Text should be created in a layout-based program such as InDesign. Image editing programs such as Photoshop are not recommended for text layouts. Greyscale images should be a minimum of 300 ppi. Colour images should be saved at 300 ppi, in either RGB or CMYK (using North American Prepress colour settings). If your image contains text, resolution should be 600 ppi. Black and white (not greyscale) images should be saved at 600ppi. For more information please see File Guidelines.
The overall dimension should be 31.5” x 82” with an image area of 31.5” x 79.5”. The 2.5” tail must be blank.
As printers, we have a biased opinion on this question. This opinion, however, seems to be backed up by most marketing professionals.
The Internet has altered some aspects of print. Phone books, big catalogs, annual reports, etc. are definitely under siege. It's sad to witness the decline of newspapers and magazines as people seek their news from other media sources, however...
The Internet "fire hose" of information is overwhelming. A well thought out, strategically placed print piece is a more powerful marketing tool: a post card, a personal letter, a thank you note, a rack card, an invitation. There is something special about a "non-spammish" piece that you can touch and feel. Especially for local marketing, survey results are off the charts in favour of a well designed printed piece as opposed to web based advertising. A tangible piece has a much better chance to be read or noticed in this "information overload" society we live in now. Print is just readjusting or altering itself by fitting in to a smaller piece of the marketing pie.
In 1975, offset printing used a photographic method to create printing plates. That's where the phrase camera ready art came from. The name Fotoprint made sense. The Foto rather than Photo part of the name was an attempt to be positioned higher in the alphabet in the yellow pages. Little did I know that digital technology would render the original method of printing extinct and the Foto in our name actually made it more difficult to find us, rather than easier. Derek Allan, then 23, now waaay older.

Only the individual or company who was originally invoiced. We will not release information to another party. We honour Canadian privacy law.
Not us. For ease of reprinting, we digitally archive all artwork, we created by us or supplied by you or a designer. If those files need to be returned, we will be happy to do so, at no charge, by emailing a PDF. If the files are too large for emailing, we will email a link to a downloadable file. If you require a format other than PDF, or different than the format in which you originally supplied the file, charges will apply.
Not you, if possible. Our experience shows that it should be someone other than the creator, especially if they have no attachment to the project and have won spelling bees in elementary school :)
You're not seeing double. The proof may contain multiple copies of the same item. You're proofing exactly what we're printing. For identical items, you only need to carefully examine one instance.
If they are different (two different names on business cards, for example) then you should check each one. We will trim the finished product to size, usually shown by green imposition lines on your proof.
Booklets and other paginated items need to be checked for the correct sequence of pages. Often this is much easier by viewing a proof in person, which we have available whenever we send you a proof online.
Luckily, we have the volume to support gang run printing. This concept describes a printing method in which mutliple printing projects are placed on a common sheet which reduces printing costs and paper waste. The increase in their popularity has enabled us to reduce the waiting times. See Ongoing Specials for more information.
We require the correct name in which the order was invoiced to. Often, there are intervening parties such as designers, ad agencies, print brokers, or individuals which may have been involved. In many cases, we have billed them.
We use colour proofs for accurate colour reference throughout production.
Printers have different equipment profiles and overheads. Generally, the most competitive printer for your project will have a combination of the most efficient production equipment for that specific job, generous volume to support that equipment and a streamlined process with as few middle men as possible. It's important to note that if a printer is less expensive on one job, it doesn't mean that they will be less expensive on every job. The difference with Fotoprint is our mandate. We only produce projects which our equipment is ideally suited for and will point you in the right direction if your request is not an ideal match for Fotoprint.
Because we save 10,052 gallons of water, 14 million BTUs, 1,120 pounds of solid waste and 2,210 pounds of greenhouse gasses over using virgin paper!
Grays Harbor Paper is leading the revolution in manufacturing environmentally-friendly paper. Harbor 100, a top-quality printing and writing paper, uses 100 percent post-consumer recycled materials and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This makes it unlike any other recycled paper product because of its carbon-neutral manufacturing process and superior performance.
The carbon-neutral process uses a combination of traditional and nontraditional biomass fuels, including wood wastes that would otherwise be deposited into landfills or burned. In February 2005, Grays Harbor Paper was certified by Green-e for manufacturing with renewable energy after adding a second electrical generator powered by renewable fuels. In the production of Harbor 100, no trees are cut down and no fossil fuels are burned. Grays Harbor Paper has been commended by the Washington State Department of Ecology and the Olympic Region Clean Air Authority for their environmentally-friendly practices.
Papers manufactured at Grays Harbor Paper are produced with either virgin, 40 percent or 100 percent post-consumer materials, but all use the same green manufacturing process to keep the impact on forests and local communities low and to meet the needs of the bioregion.
Images from the web are low resolution, 72 dpi, and will look pixellated when printed. You will not be happy with the results. As well, web sites are generally protected under copyright so copying from them is illegal.
We position (impose) your document to achieve the best print quality. Often that means positioning images with heavy ink coverage in specific areas which will be reflected in the orientation of your proof. You should see arrows in the PDF viewer that let you rotate the page view. If not, you can also choose View->rotate view.
You are proofing exactly what we are printing. This is the safest way to ensure no errors, human or computer.
If all imposed items are the same image, you only need to proof one for content. If they are multiple/different images (eg. two different business cards), then you should check each one. After printing, we will trim the finished product to size, usually shown by green imposition lines on your proof.
Booklets and other paginated items should to be checked for the correct page sequence.
No. Printing services in BC have always been subject to Federal and Provincial taxes. As of July 1, they will be rolled into one tax, rather than two.
Yes, and here's why:
Except for stocks that are prepackaged (usually in reams of 500 sheets), we generally print slightly more than you have ordered. Printing industry trade standards allow for under runs of up to 5%. If you plan to send your printing to a mailing house or must have a guaranteed quantity, we recommend that you order 5% over the minimum quantity you need.
With some recycled stocks, especially full colour offset printing, yes. Colours may darken and become muted. Image clarity can also be sacrificed as some recycled papers are very porous (not calendered). If accuracy of colour and quality of image are important, please ask our advice before directing us to a specific recycled paper. We will be able to help you balance environmentally friendly papers and print quality.
The print process, the type and finish of the card stock, the coating options, the graphics, the environment and length of time the cards are kept in a wallet will all have an impact on how the cards will stand up. We have methods of protection and suggestions as to how to accomplish this but it is always a good idea to use a separate business card holder.
Yes, but MS Office documents are prone to font substitution, text reflow, and low resolution images. To help to eliminate most of these issues without incurring extra costs, please create and send us a PDF (see our File Guidelines section)
We all have opinions on good and bad design but it is not our place to judge. If you ask 5 Fotoprint staff their opinion, you will probably get 5 different answers. Art is in the eye of the beholder.
Our job is to reproduce your art without compromise to quality so in the event that your artwork may not suited to our print process, we will advise you.
Yes. If printed at Fotoprint, we will be happy to inventory for you. It is common for us to store shells or preprints and imprint on them as needed. In many cases, the process of preprinting shells provides colour consistency and is also less expensive.
We often find that our estimates do not have the same specifications as other printers and when we are given the opportunity to compare, we are usually right in line with our pricing. Otherwise, we do not match prices. Everyone enjoys consistent low pricing, every day. We pay no franchise fees and as a result, offer the most competitive rates in Canada. Our customers can relax with the knowledge that our first price is always our best price.
